Bowden CC 1st XI secure their status in Division 4 for next season with a crucial last ball victory over Wellingborough Town

13 Sep 2010

Bowden first XI entertained Wellingborough Town knowing that a win would almost certainly guarantee safety from relegation. Bowden won the toss and elected to bowl. On a slow damp wicket, which proved difficult to bat on, the Bowden opening pair of Ed Ingram and Brad Downing were unfortunate not to make an early break through. The Wellingborough batsman managed to post a decent score of 192 for 7 with Sam Freer (4 for 50) the pick of the home side’s bowlers. Brad Downing finished with 1 for 37.

After tea the Bowden innings commenced. Mick Brammer and Danny Varnsverry opened and set a decent platform for Bowden to build upon. After the loss of the opening pair Bowden were still in with a chance of chasing down the total. A couple more wickets fell cheaply leaving Bowden in need of another steady partnership. Rob Gomez and Brad Downing batting together were trying to keep within touch of an increasing run rate.

With 3 overs remaining Bowden required 30 runs for victory. A few hefty blows from Gomez and intelligent batting from Downing left the game poised at 3 runs to win from the final ball. A miss-timed shot from Gomez almost guaranteed a loss for Bowden, but an odd series of events involving overthrows and a missed run out enabled Gomez (84 not out) and Downing (14 not out) to scramble the 3 runs required for victory.
