Match report Thoughts can now turn to life in Division 10 next season for Bowden 2nd XI after a 7 wicket home defeat by top of the table Irchester on Saturday.

It was by no means a performance lacking spirit but at this level the side needs to find a couple of penetrating opening bowlers to give themselves a chance of winning a few more matches.

Bowden were asked to bat first and got off to a cautious start with the opening pair putting 30 on the board before the first wicket fell. Steve Oldfield (46) and Sam Gomez (11) accelerated the scoring and a captain’s inning s from Fergus Kenny (47) helped guide the home side to 164 for 7 in their 45 overs.

Ali Williams (0 for 32) from his 10 overs bowled with control but was unable to make the breakthrough. Aswan Karthikeyan (2 for 35) did pick up a couple of wickets and also succeeded in ‘beaning’ his own wicket keeper, catching him full square on the head with a sharply rising delivery. Lee Munton (1 for 43) bowled tidily but wasn’t able to make in-roads into the Irchester batting line-up. And the league leaders paced their run chase effectively, reaching their target for the loss of just 3 wickets in the 37th over.
