Loughborough Uni v Bowden Cricket Club Junior Girls on Mon 27 Feb 2012 at 20:00
Bowden Cricket Club Lost by 10 runs
Match report
Another fantastic effort from the Girls saw them come just 10 runs short of chasing down a formidable target of 120 set by many people's 'pre-tournament favourites' - Loughborough Uni.
Despite the total, Bowdens bowlers weren't giving much away, again outbowling their opponents in the wides/no balls department, and it took until the 8th over before any of the students found the boundary. Continuing behind the stumps, Sophie T pulled off some stops that Nico would have been proud of, limiting the Loughborough chances for any extra runs. The pick of the bowlers was Eleanor Robinson with 2-15 from her 2 overs. Merryn and Emily picked up the other wickets. Whereas last week all 4 wickets were run out, this week it was the bowlers hitting the stumps - all 4 clean bowled!!
Eleanor opened the batting with Naomi and between them they added 33 before Naomi was adjudged caught behind - much debate ensued, was it a bumpball, but the umpires decision is final! This brought Merryn to the crease for her first knock in the tournament, and she introduced herself with a sumptuous straight drive which would have gone for 6 but for the iron girder supporting the roof!!
Undeterred the pair added 40 runs in 3 overs, almost keeping Bowden up with the asking rate, before Eleanor was bowled for a well played, run-a-ball 21.
Sophie Gomez then joined Merryn, and a cracking pull from Sophie produced a boundary and the score had moved to 88, before a devastating spell saw 3 wickets fall in 4 balls, as Merryn (21) and both Sophies were despatched.
Emily, batting on as 'last lady' batted through the last over, to ensure we used our full allotment of overs.
The girls are really getting to grip with this format after 2 games, they were more aware of 'quick runs' this week, as reflected in the scoring, and this against a side who held the opposition to 46 off 10 overs last week!!
2 games and 2 defeats, but nobody should be down, no disrespect to our upcoming opponents, but we've played (in my opinion) the teams expected to be at he top! Both opponents, but especially tonight's, were taken aback by the fight and spirit shown - they were expecting an easier ride! Go Get 'Em Girls, a deserved victory is not far off!
(scoring is unofficial, but we did agree the overall totals!!)
