Lutterworth v Bowden Cricket Club Junior Girls on Mon 20 Feb 2012 at 19:00
Bowden Cricket Club Lost by 2 wickets
Match report
A fantastic effort by the Girls came close to upsetting the experienced Lutterworth team.
In this, the opening fixture in the new Womens Indoor League, skipper Eleanor Robinson won the toss and took the bold step of batting first.
The early loss of Sophie Tweddle, run out, did not derail the Bowden innings, as Emily Jefferson and Naomi Fraser set about the Lutterworth attack with gusto. The pair had added 68 for the second wicket before Naomi was run out for 21. Eleanor joined Emily and between them they saw out the remaining 2 overs, taking the score to a handy 81-3 - Eleanor was run out off the final ball of the innings going for broke, trying to get another on the total, leaving Emily unbeaten on 28.
Up against an all-county opening pair, Emily and Merryn Hobbs, opening the bowling faced an early test, but the introduction of Sophie Gomez in the third over provided the breakthrough. Her first two deliveries brought wickets as "Dead-Eye" Emily, hit the stumps to run out both openers. 30-0 became 30-2 and the game was truly 'on'.
Another run out, in the 5th over, made further in roads, before the 'Gomez/Jefferson' duo struck again in the 6th with Emily's 3rd run out of the night, at 54-4 Lutterworth were wobbling.
Unfortunately for Bowden, the last pair hit out, and a couple of lusty blows saw them home.
The girls should be proud of their efforts tonight, this was the first match in a new format, and even the organisers were struggling to get to grips with some of the finer points! The batting showed the benefits of hitting straight, as Emily (twice), Naomi and Eleanor all found the back wall to claim a 'boundary'. On the bowling side there was no little pace on offer, and the accuracy was good to see.(we conceded only 12runs in wides, while benefiting from 22runs). The fielding speaks for itself, 3 direct hit run outs, and we must not overlook a very tidy display behind the timbers from Sophie, who only knew for sure she would be keeping just before the start!
Onwards and upwards - this team will win a game (or two) in this league
In the nights other match, Loughborough Uni (113-4) defeated Ibstock (46-4)
NB: due to some discrepancies with the scoring rules, the scorecard is 'unofficial'. The official card shows Bowden 68-3 and Lutterworth 69-4.
