Sileby Women and Girls v Bowden Cricket Club Junior Girls on Wed 11 May 2011 at 6 pm
Bowden Cricket Club Lost by 99 runs

Match report On Wednesday the 11th may Bowden CC Girls travelled the distance to Sileby Women and Girls for their first game of the season. New captain Hannah Sayles won the toss and elected to field first.

Opening bowlers Eleanor Robinson (0-21) and Naomi Fraser (1-24) bowled with good pace and control. Sileby’s opening pair made it safely to 52 without loss. However, the introduction of 10 year old Rosie Burke (1-22) broke the dangerous partnership and allowed Bowden back in the game. Burke was well supported by Sophie Gomez (0-19) and Sophie Tweddle (0-16), both showing promise at this early stage of the season. Arguably the pick of Bowden’s bowlers was Merryn Hobbs (3-17) whose accurate wicket to wicket bowling earned her the reward of three key wickets, including a hatrick chance. Some late order hitting helped Sileby to a score of 130 from their allotted overs.

Bowden set about the run chase slowly and after two overs found themselves 2 down losing both openers Imogen Keenan and Jo Weston to some experienced bowling. Both however played encouraging shots and looked calm in the middle. This bought Eleanor Robinson and Hannah Sayles to the crease; the pair set about rebuilding Bowden’s innings but both fell to superb bowling form the Sileby attack. Jess Noble and Sophie Tweddle decided attacking was the best option. After a few overs of steady run flow for Bowden Jess and Sophie both fell quickly. The latter the victim of a dodgy run out. The introduction of the youngest member of the team Rosie Burke enabled Bowden reached a respectable total. Burke was well supported By Sophie Gomez who offered good support and encouragement to her much younger teammate. But it was the partnership of Naomi Fraser and Rosie that frustrated the bowlers and troubled the scorers. Both Burke and Fraser played with confidence and calmness that is highly impressive for their age. When Fraser fell to a beauty of a delivery her young partner quickly followed. That left Merryn Hobbs on 0*.

Bowden Girls should be pleased with their effort and the girl’s encouragement of fellow teammates was impeccable. Woman of the match went to debutant Rosie Burke for her impressive display at her very young age. The girls can now look forward to future fixtures including the Lady Taveners Tournament.
