Match report THE Roger Funnell memorial game took place at Great Bowden recreation ground on Sunday.

The Funnell Xl won the toss and elected to bat but Bowden managed to contain the visitors relatively well early on, thanks to Upal Soysa taking 1 for 24 from seven overs, opener Tony Marlow building a steady innings of 27 after John Lee shelled simple catch when he was on 0.

The third wicket proved difficult to find for Bowden as Nick Staff (91) bludgeoned the ball to all parts after being dropped in the teens. Staff shared a 117-run partnership with Ben Watts (83 not out) before he was bowled by seamer Ben Wade (8-0-50-2).

Watts also scored quickly to guide the Funnell Xl to 267 for 8.

Bowden’s response started in fine fashion thanks to a swashbuckling 49 from Lee. Before he was caught on the boundary the game was in the balance at 55 for 2.

Cometh the hour cometh the man. That man was Mark Kenny, supported brilliantly by Rob and Sam Gomez (39 and 29 respectively).

They swung the game in Bowden’s favour. Kenny guided Bowden to victory with ten balls to spare, bringing up his ton from just 82 balls. Bowden won by five wickets and retain the Roger Funnell Trophy.
