Bowden Cricket Club 2nd XI v Old Grammarians II on Sat 23 Jul 2011 at 1.30 pm
Bowden Cricket Club Lost by 51 runs
Match report
The position is beginning to look a little bleak for Bowden 2nd XI as they now prop up the Division 9 league table following defeat at home to Wellingborough old Grammarians on Saturday. With five matches left this season, Bowden realistically need to win three of these matches to give themselves a chance of avoiding the drop.
It was yet another frustrating performance. And yet again, the side put itself in a winning position only to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. On a firm looking pitch the visitors won the toss and were immediately pegged back by an exceptionally miserly opening spell from Alexa Passingham (1 for 12 from 9 overs) and Tony Roberts (2 for 20 from 10 overs).
Bowden were on top from the start and their catching and ground fielding was excellent. Two run-outs testify to their sharpness in the field. Wellingborough OG’s lost wickets at regular intervals and were never able to let their innings gain any traction. Fergus Kenny (4 for 48) destroyed the middle order and Lee Munton (1 for 45) weighed in with a wicket towards the end of the innings. A score of 141 all out in the 44th over looked eminently within the home sides reach.
Preservation of early wickets is important when chasing down a smallish total in order to deny the fielding side any momentum. This was something Bowden failed to do. Gary Waterfield (4) and Ben Wade (0) departed early. Simon Linsell (17) top-scored in the innings as Bowden fell away alarmingly. Jamie Horne (11), Fergus Kenny (14) and Shaun Morris (13) offered some resistance in the middle order but the tail failed to wag and the innings petered out tamely for a disappointing 90 all out inside the 37th over.
