Bowden Cricket Club 2nd XI v Great Oakley II on Sat 11 Jun 2011 at 1.30 pm
Bowden Cricket Club Won by 25 runs
Match report
A never-say-die attitude saw Bowden 2nd XI turn the game around on Saturday and record a thoroughly deserved win against Gt. Oakley. It must be something of a record as for a seventh consecutive league fixture, Bowden batted first, this time electing to do so having won the toss. The dry weather is starting to have an effect on the pitches now and variable bounce was prevalent from the start.
Despite the loss of a couple of early wickets against some good, tight and accurate opening bowling, Gary Waterfield (24) and Tony Roberts (29) pushed the score along at a fair clip, posting the half century in good time. But Waterfield's departure followed by the wicket of Henry Hall (4) cheaply left the innings precariously placed. Alex Frith (17) supported Roberts and the pair steadied the ship. Both fell in quick succession and both LBW on the deteriorating surface. At 90 for 6 the game was slipping away from Bowden. But Simon Linsell (30) and Sam Keenan (17) played with calm authority as the pair, along with Lee Munton (6) and Tom Reeve (4) posted a reasonable total of 158 all out and gave the bowlers a chance.
Gt. Oakley's opening pair are known for a no-nonsense approach and it was no surprise when they set off quickly from the start. The pair raced along to 63 in just the 11th opener before Sam Keenan (1 for 39) claimed the vital wicket. Tom Reeve (0 for 21) went unrewarded. By the 15th over the visitors were halfway to their target at 80 for 1 and seemingly costing to victory. But this is a pugnacious Bowden team, ready to battle hard and now they had an opening. During the course of the next hour they claimed 5 excellent catches, dropping nothing and in just a further 16 overs dismantled the visitors batting line-up for the addition of only a further 53 runs.
And it was the spin of Alex Frith (3 for 44) and Mick Brammer (6 for 24) who did the damage. Using the pitch conditions to great effect they secured a 25 run win for the village side as Gt. Oakley fell short at 133 all out in the 31st over.
