Bowden Cricket Club 2nd XI v Burton Latimer III on Sat 28 May 2011 at 1.30 pm
Bowden Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets
Match report
Another promising display by a youthful Bowden 2nd XI ended ultimately in a five wicket defeat at the hands of Burton Latimer 3rd XI at the Rec on Saturday. As has been the case in all four previous league matches so far this season Bowden batted first on a firm, hard and dry pitch and posted a decent total of 164 for 9 from their allocation of 45 overs.
Skipper Fergus Kenny (21) and Gary Waterfield (28) laid a solid, if somewhat slow, opening partnership of 45. Khush Patel (13) injected some impetus into the innings and when Tony Roberts (41) strode to the crease the scoring rate increased to three runs per over. Despite the loss of Patel and Henry Hall,(4) cheaply, Alex Firth (12) helped Roberts push the score along. After Roberts had fallen LBW it was left to Simon Linsell (21 not out) to marshall the lower order through to a competitive score.
It was important to make early in-roads into the visitors batting line-up but despite yet another excellent opening spell from Tom Reeve (0 for 26) and Ali Williams (0 for 21) the openers got off to a reasonable start. It was the introduction of spinners Alex Frith (1 for 28 in 12 overs) and Lee Munton (1 for 22) who made the breakthrough but they were unable to seize the opportunity as Burton Latimer continued to accumulate runs at the required rate. Simon Linsell (2 for 25) managed to winkle out a couple of batsmen with his in-swingers but by then the visitors had the victory target in sight and lost just one further wicket to Ali Gordon (1 for 26) before completing the win with six overs to spare.
