Old Grammarians II v Bowden Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 21 May 2011 at 1.30 pm
Bowden Cricket Club Won by 65 runs
Match report
A perfect team performance by Bowden's 2nd XI saw them record their second win of the season as they trounced their hosts Wellingborough Old Grammarians by 65 runs. It was a thoroughly professional performance as the villagers outgunned the town side in every department.
Yet again Bowden decided to bat first on winning the toss and set about building a decent total to try and create scoreboard pressure and give their young bowlers something to play with. As has been the case this season, Bowden bounced back from the loss of a couple of early wickets as captain Fergus Kenny (34) and Tony Roberts crafted a solid third wicket partnership of 70 runs. Roberts was eventually last man out for a scintillating century (102) in the 44th over. But it wasn't plain sailing. There was the usual middle order wobble but Robert's class and experience, together with some late order support from Alex Frith (13) and Lee Munton (17), who sweetly timed four consecutive boundaries, ensured that Bowden captured maximum batting points as the posted an impressive 201 all out.
Lee Munton's day just kept getting better and better. After an opening salvo from Tom Reeve (0 for 11), who continues to impress as this level, the young spinner went on to record his first five-wicket haul for the senior side (5 for 41) as he destroyed Wellingborough's top order, and also to bag two catches. And it was the side's other young spinners who cleaned up the remaining wickets with Alex Frith (3 for 29) and Ali Gordon (2 for 10) polishing off the innings as OG's subsided to 136 all and leave Bowden comfortable placed in mid-table.
