Great Oakley II v Bowden Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 30 Apr 2011 at 1.30 pm
Bowden Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets
Match report
Bowden's second XI got their season in Division nine off to a disappointing start with a heavy seven wicket defeat at the hands of their hosts, Great Oakley.
Newly appointed captain, Fergus Kenny, won the toss and elected to bat first on a warm but breezy afternoon at the pretty Northamptonshire ground. But the villagers were soon in trouble when Steve Oldfield (0) and Andy Gordon (4) left the side teetering at 9 for 2. Gary Waterfield (15) and Fergus Kenny (23) set about repairing the innings, taking the score to 43 before Waterfield missed a straight one and was bowled. Ben Wade (14) clubbed a couple of lusty blows before trying once too often and holing out at cow-corner, having been dropped in the same spot a few balls previously.
Chris Rose could only contribute a single before being well caught at square leg. At 94 for 6 a low total was looking likely but Joe Robinson (22) and Simon Linsell (37 not out) set about the attack, playing positively and using up the overs. Despite Robinson's dismissal, Alex Frith (6) and Ali Williams (4 not out) helped out towards the end of the inning which closed at a respectable 157 for 8 from their 45 overs.
After tea however, the home side showed what they thought about the depleted Bowden bowling resources as they smashed their way to their target in a little over 20 overs. The ball disappeared to all corners of the ground, the fielders spending more time in the cow-field retrieving the ball than within the confines of the boundary ropes! No bowler was immune to the onslaught as Daniel Partridge (70) and Mitchell Abbott (32) played impressively. Only Fergus Kenny (1 for 35), Simon Linsell (1 for 24) and Steve Oldfield (1 for 22) managed to claim a wicket.
