Finedon Dolben 3rds v Bowden Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 03 Jul 2010 at 1.30pm
Bowden Cricket Club Lost by 59 runs
Match report
Bowden’s fragile batting line up once again proved to be their undoing after the bowlers had set up the chances of a surprise win at high flying Finedon Dolben.
Despite losing the toss on a hot afternoon the appearance of the pitch gave Bowden cause for optimism as they took to the field. A good covering of grass on a dry surface promised an interesting experience for the batters. Gary Freestone (3 for 16) and Steve Bellamy (3 for 24) were soon amongst the wickets as they ripped out the top order batsmen with an aggressive opening salvo of fast bowling. Finedon’s innings was in disarray at 29 for 6 and Bowden scented an early finish to the day. The last four Finedon wickets proved a little more difficult to come by as Kevin Fothergill (28) and Kevin Piggott (20) decided to try and bludgeon their side out of trouble. The pair did manage to increase the score before Sam Keenan (3 for 28) and Jack Rose (1 for 11) cleaned up the tail as the home side were dismissed for 112 inside 30 overs.
It was never going to be an easy chase on the wearing pitch. Earlier in the season, Finedon had dismissed Bowden for a paltry 34 and it needed some strong nerves to see the villagers to victory. Despite the loss of Gary Waterfield cheaply, Steve Oldfield (20) and Fergus Kenny (21) had progressed the score to 31 before the partnership was broken. Adam Weston (5 for 9) who destroyed Bowden’s batting in May was again on top form and bowled with excellent movement, pace and accuracy as he proceeded to rip out batsmen after batsmen. Weston was supported by Tom Minney (2 for 34) and Ashley Harrison (2 for 3) as Bowden crashed to 53 all out and a long way short of a remarkable success.
