Bowden Cricket Club 2nd XI v Old Grammarians 2nd on Sat 26 Jun 2010 at 1.30pm
Bowden Cricket Club Lost by 66 runs

Match report Hosting the league leaders at the Rec on Saturday, Bowden’s 2nd XI was always going to be up against it but the side put in another positive performance despite eventually going to down a 66 run defeat.

Old Grammarians had little hesitation in batting first given the swelteringly hot afternoon, a good looking surface and a side which has been full of runs this season. Short bowling spells were the order of the day for Bowden’s bowlers and the ever reliable pair of Gary Freestone (1 for 29) and Steve Bellamy (2 for 46) started of well, when Freestone removed the OG’s opener for a duck. OG’s Captain Andy Brierley (88) started cautiously but slowly began to accumulate runs. He was well supported by Stuart Richards (38) and the pair was threatening to put together a really big partnership before an impressive spell of swing bowling from Sam Keenan (2 for 24) knocked over Richard’s middle stump.

With the faster bowlers beginning to wilt in the heat it required a good spell of leg spin bowling from the youngster Alex Frith. Despite struggling in his initial 5 overs Frith persevered and was rewarded with the wicket of Derek Fitzsimmons, lbw for 13. This gave the bowler the confidence he needed and he then proceeded to reel off a further 8 overs of quality spin bowling, with good line and length and discipline, eventually finishing with figures of 4 for 75 as OG’s closed their innings on 217 for 9.

Bowden’s reply began when Gary Waterfield (11) and particularly Steve Oldfield (45) took on the OG’s opening bowling pair and began to lay a foundation for the stiff run chase. Both players punished anything wayward and they raced away to 34 before Waterfield fell. Despite a second wicket falling shortly afterwards, Steve Mitchell (65) joined Oldfield and the pair continued in the same vein and took the score past 100 and the seeds of doubt began to form in the league leaders minds.

As has happened so often this season the loss of a middle order wicket has hastened a collapse and today was no different. From a promising position of 113 for 2, Bowden then found themselves reduced to 122 for 7 and the game was effectively at an end. A few lusty blows in the closing overs ensured that Bowden gained an extra batting point as they were eventually bowled out for 151.
