Bowden Cricket Club 2nd XI v Great Houghton 2nds on Sat 29 May 2010 at 1.30pm
Bowden Cricket Club Won Won by 5 wickets
Match report
Bowden 2nd XI played a patient waiting game during the wet weather that was around on Saturday. The team was keen to play Gt Houghton given the respective league positions of the two sides and Bowden were rewarded during the 4 hour window when the clouds stopped depositing their rain and they were able to get onto the Rec and see off their opponents.
The game started at 3.45pm when Bowden’s skipper won his fourth consecutive toss and decided to bowl first in a reduced 27 over per side match. The decision to field first was instantly rewarded when opening bowlers Eddie Ingram (2 for 24) and Gary Freestone (1 for 29) had reduced the visitors to 13 for 2. A further shower resulted in the loss of 6 overs from the match but this didn’t dampen Bowden’s enthusiasm.
Going for the ‘kill’ the bowlers consistently kept the batters on the back foot and it was in thanks largely to a magnificent spell of hostile fast bowling from Steve Bellamy who claimed the exceptional figures of 6 for 18 from 8 overs that Gt Houghton were simply blown away, all out for 79 in the 25th over.
Chasing low scores can sometimes prove problematical and Bowden certainly ‘wobbled’ during the early part of the innings. Danny Varnsverry (0) was dismissed seventh ball, his first delivery, a fate similarly awaiting Eddie Ingram (0). Bowden became becalmed and with the loss of Khush Patel (11) and Steve Bellamy also for a duck the home side were in real danger of messing things up at 30 for 4. However, the ever reliable Gary Waterfield (33 not out) was a model of calmness and was able to ensure that, with the help of Ali Williams (6) and Sam Gomez (6 not out), the villagers were able to record their first league victory of the season when they reached 82 for 5.
