Match report
Bowden 2nd XI fielded what, on paper, appeared to be an under strength side for Saturday’s league fixture at Podington, but the side acquitted themselves well and will take many positives despite a defeat on the opening day of the season.
Winning the toss, Bowden invited the home side to have first use of a very green wicket. Podington’s openers attacked from the start and contributed a useful 37 runs before the first wicket fell to Steve Bellamy who immediately followed up next ball by claiming his second wicket when keeper Andy Marshall snaffled an excellent catch. Unable to complete the hat-trick, Bellamy still went on to complete an impressive spell (5 for 30 from 13 overs).
Gary Freestone (1 for 71) from the other end proved expensive and the side were thankful to the off-spin of veteran Malcolm Walker (2 for 50) and the sprightly Danny Varnsverry (0 for 29) to put the brakes on the scoring. Wickets continued to fall and at the halfway stage Podington were scoring at four an over. The home side’s opening batter, Alan Coleman, proved an obdurate obstacle however. Dropped when he had made 30 he went on to complete an undefeated 121 not out. Only 3 other batsmen reached double figures and without Coleman’s heroics Bowden would have polished off the Bedfordshire side for many runs fewer than the 225 they finally posted.
After the tea interval Bowden’s opening pair of Danny Varnsverry (35) and Fergus Kenny (16) laid a solid platform for the run chase. Both however fell in quick succession and with Sam Gomez (0) failing to contribute, the visitors were quickly on the back foot. Skipper Simon Linsell (15) and Steve Bellamy (16) set about rebuilding the innings. As the score approached 100 the pair began to take control and the chances of chasing down the target looked possible until Linsell holed out in the deep and Bellamy was bowled quickly afterwards. It was an almost impossible task from there to pass the winning post but the remaining batters, Upal Soysa (7), Malcolm Walker (13 not out) and Andy Marshall (7 not out) ensured that Bowden posted a creditable 141 for 7 in reply.
