Bowden Cricket Club 1st XI v Ashby Timken on Sat 22 May 2010 at 1.00pm

Match report
It was a case of déjà vu for Great Bowden 1st XI when they welcomed Ashby Timkin to the Recreation Ground. The Captain was a little confused at the outcome of the toss but these days batting first holds no fears for Bowden. As usual, they built a solid platform which, for the second week running, enabled them to post a substantial score. The pleasing thing was that this week other members of the top order made the greatest contributions to the total.
The wicket was good and the outfield fast. Mick Brammer (25) and Tony Roberts (28) laid the foundations and when they departed Chris Knowles and Ben Wade continued the good work. Knowles was all controlled power with some highly effective hitting, which resulted in him contributing 64. Wade, on the other hand played some particularly stylish and well-timed shots in his 50. Their partnership of 119 came at a crucial stage of the game. Some late hitting, especially by Rob Gomez (34 not out) meant that for the second week running Bowden passed 250 by setting Ashby 255 to win.
Like Wellingborough Indians the previous week, Ashby were never in contention. They lost their first wicket in the 9th over to a fine delivery by Eddie Ingram, caught at the wicket by Chris Rose. Ashby continued to score a few runs but were never up with the required rate. Meanwhile, wickets fell steadily so they had to resort to playing defensively against some highly effective bowling by Sam Freer and Brammer. Brammer recorded the best figures of the day by taking four wickets while conceding only 17 runs. When Brammer took his last two wickets in the last over, Bowden saw the quality of the remaining batsmen, and the realisation dawned on them how close they had been to a win.
Bowden’s problem now is a good one to have. The other teams in the Division will know what a powerful batting unit they have become and will be ever more inclined to try to escape with a draw. An improved performance by the Captain with the coin will surely mean Bowden will make add to their account in the “Games Won” column of the league table.
