Match report Outplayed in all departments was the verdict after Bowden 2nd XI’s comprehensive 9 wicket defeat at the hands of their visitors, S&L Corby, on Saturday.

Too many poor shots from the batters and the lack of any penetration from the bowlers meant that Bowden never really got close to their nearest rivals in Division 9 of the Northants League.

Batting first for the tenth league match out of eleven, Bowden got off to a poor and slow start with the early loss of the wickets of Captain Fergus Kenny (1) and Gary Waterfield (8). Steve Oldfield (40) showed a fair degree of application but the middle order of Joe Robinson (0), Ali Williams (0) and Henry Soysa (0) failed to contribute a run between them. Simon Linsell (27 not out) helped steady the ship and with the loss of Oldfield he marshalled the ‘tail’. Contributions from Sam Gomez (12) and Aswin Kaqrthikeyan (22) helped Bowden bat out their 45 overs, but a score of 132 for 9 needed some excellent bowling if Bowden were to win the match.

Too many wide deliveries and not enough balls threatening the stumps meant that S&L had a relatively easy task in chasing down the runs for victory. And they did so within 28 overs as Daryl Gunn (79 not out) and Stephen Hallam (22) were the main contributors. Of Bowden’s bowlers, only Lee Munton (1 for 21) managed to capture a wicket.
